Origins and settlement
The history of Hungary reaches far beyond its foundation as a kingdom in the year 1000 AD. For centuries the region was home to nomadic tribes and ancient civilizations that shaped the cultural and social character of the Carpathian Basin. One of the most important moments in Hungarian history is the arrival of the Magyars, led by the seven tribal chieftains, who established their dominance in the region in 896 AD.
The first inhabitants and the Roman Empire
Before the arrival of the Magyars, Celts and Germanic tribes were the main inhabitants of the region. Later the area was occupied by the Roman Empire. During this period the Romans established Pannonia, a Roman province that played a crucial role in Rome’s expansion to the east. The ruins of this civilization can still be seen in important cities such as Aquincum, today part of Budapest.
The arrival of the Magyars
In 896 the Magyar tribes, under the leadership of Prince Árpád, arrived in the Carpathian Basin, an event that marked the beginning of Hungary’s history as we know it. The Magyars settled in what is now Hungary, and the event known as the Hungarian Conquest (Honfoglalás) is a key point in their national identity.
Influence of nomadic peoples
Early Hungarian society was influenced by a mix of nomadic-origin cultures and the European civilizations with which they came into contact. Over the centuries Hungary was a crossroads of cultures, which enriched its cultural diversity.

In the year 1000 AD, under the leadership of Stephen I, Hungary officially became a Christian kingdom, which consolidated its position in Europe. From that moment the nation began to develop as one of the leading European kingdoms.
